The mooring chock is a very important mooring equipment. In the process of mooring ship, it bears huge loads. Usually the ship bollards, mooring chocks for the whole ship mooring use.

Features of EU /U.S Type Panama Chock

Type: EU Type, U.S Type

Installation: deck mounted, and bulwark mounted.

Used for temporary mooring. 

Prevent wear and tear on mooring lines.

Welded at vessel bow.

Paint primed or galvanized.

Choice will depend primarily on the size of the vessel and the diameter of the lines.

Found at the vessel’s bow bulwarks, below the gunwale.

   

Types of vessel

Tankers

Tankers are vessels that carry liquids in bulk.

Aframax

80,000-120,000 dwt- only carry crude oil.

Chemical tanker Usually vary from 5,000-40,000 dwt. They carry small parcels of high value chemicals.

Liquid natural gas (LNG) Vary in size from under 20,000 dwt to over 130,000. They only carry natural gas in liquid form.

Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) These vary in size, but are usually around 80,000 dwt.

The carry liquefied petroleum gas- such as butane and propane –and a small selection of other liquefied gases like ammonia.

Product tanker Vary from 10,000-100,000dwt. They usually carry refined petroleum products (white oils) and black oils in greater volumes than chemical tankers do.

Suezmas 120,000-200,000 dwt. Only carry crude oil. They are the largest vessels capable of passing through the Suez Canal.

VLCC(very large crude carrier)Up to 200,000 dwt. They only carry crude oil.

ULCC(Ultra large crude carrier)

Bulkers, or bulk carriers, are vessels that carry bulk solids.

Capsize

These are 80,000 dwt and over. They normally carry cargoes such as iron ore, coal and so on.

Panamax

50,000-80,000 dwt typical cargoes include coal, fertilizer and so on. They are the largest vessels which can pass through the Panama Canal.

Handymax

35,000-50,000 dwt. They carry a wide range of bulk cargoes such as fertilizer, scrap etc.

Handysize

10,000-35,000 dwt. They carry general bulk solids.

OBO

OBO stands for ‘ore/bulk/oil’ and the vessels are sometimes called combined carriers. They can carry solids (ore and bulk cargoes) and crude oil, but not at the same time.

PROBO

PROBO stands for ‘product ore/bulk/oil’. They carry the same cargo as OBOs, but can also carry refined petroleum products. This is because the cargo holds are usually coated with a cargo tank coating.

Container ship

These carry a cargo of containers on scheduled routes. Size is normally measured in teu (the size of a 20 foot standard container). The biggest can be up to 8100 teu.

General cargo

These are small vessels carrying a wide range of paletted and individual cargoes-for instance, machinery, drums, bags and so on.

RORO

RORO stands for ‘roll on, roll off’. These vessels carry road and rail vehicles and can be unloaded by wheeled transport.

Car carrier

Car carrier, or vehicle carriers, carry newly manufactured cars.

Reefer

Reefers are refrigerated cargo vessels. They are similar to general cargo vessels, but the holds are refrigerated. They usually carry perishable foods like and meat.

FPSO

FPSO are floating production storage and offloading vessels. They take crude oil from undersea wells, process it and store it before loading it into tankers to be carried to a refinery or land storage.

Passenger ship

Vessels either carrying passengers between ports (a ferry) or for pleasure (a cruise vessel).

Miscellaneous

There are a number of vessels designed to carry the particular type of cargo they named after- for instance, wood chip carrier, cement carrier. They have a similar design to tankers (for specialize liquids) or bulkers (for particular cargoes). They are also likely to have specialized equipment.
